On the whole, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum looks like a promising action-adventure game that should appeal to LotR fans - especially those of the books, since the game adheres closely to Tolkien's written works more than the Peter Jackson films or original stories like in the Middle-earth games. During the Woodland Realm portion, Gollum is trying to find a possible friend - a new and original character that will help him escape but also teases the ways in which Lord of the Rings: Gollum will change canon - or at least move beyond it.

Of course, each location will have expansive areas and as anyone who's read the books will know, there's a lot in both Mirkwood and Mordor for Gollum to possibly explore. The two main locations of the game were confirmed as Mirkwood and Mordor, and the environments of both look great in their own ways. It's unclear how much they'll actually be in the game, however, as these were described as 'cameos' by the developers. This is sometime after Aragorn and Gandalf have tracked Gollum down, and although Aragorn wasn't shown in the preview, Gandalf and Thranduil (King of the Mirkwood Elves) are briefly shown near the end, teasing at the iconic characters and recognizable names that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will feature. Later in the preview, Gollum is found swimming inside the Woodland Realm, having escaped from the Wood Elves but unable to find his way out.

A moment later, Shelob is heard eating them and is spotted slinking away. During The Lord of the Rings: Gollum preview, for example, Gollum tosses a small object to distract the Orcs and draw their attention.

Gollum can sneak up and take down Orcs with the right amount of stealth and luck, but there are also creative ways that players can avoid battles altogether - or kill Orcs through other means. One can also give gameplay hints to the other, which is an interesting way to give players advice without breaking immersion.

Since Gollum has a split personality with Sméagol, the two can bicker and argue from time to time.
